About the centre
Toronto Islamic Centre is a masjid and community centre on Yonge Street, a few minutes from Bloor–Yonge station. It is owned outright by the community that prays in it.
What happens here
The centre holds the five daily prayers and Jumu'ah, and runs classes and community programs through the week. Because of where it sits, on one of the busiest streets in the country, a lot of people walk in simply to ask what Islam is. Answering that, giving away copies of the Quran, and supporting people who have recently become Muslim are a steady part of the centre's work.
It is used by people who work and study downtown, by families, and by newcomers to the city. Visitors who are not Muslim are welcome.
A masjid bought without riba
For thirteen years the centre operated out of rented space, always one lease away from having to move. In 2023 the opportunity came to buy the building outright, on an interest-free agreement, if the community could raise the money in time.
It did. In the final 48 hours before the December 2023 deadline, 847 people gave a combined $101,480, and the purchase went through. The rest came from Qardh Hasanah: interest-free loans from individual members of the community, lent on trust and with no interest attached.
That is why the centre now carries an obligation rather than a mortgage. The money is owed to neighbours and congregants, not to a bank, and repaying them is the centre's current priority.
